Custom homes on Eagle Mountain Lake and the rural communities west of Lake Worth. Acreage, waterfront, and everything between.
Azle clients come to us for two reasons: lake access and elbow room.
Open Prairie has been building in Azle and around Eagle Mountain Lake for years. The work splits cleanly into two kinds of project: waterfront luxury homes that need to be engineered for lake-edge soil conditions and the eventual flood event, and acreage builds tucked into the rural country just west of Fort Worth, where families come for the privacy and the night sky. Azle ISD serves the residential side, and the town’s position on SH 199 puts downtown Fort Worth twenty-five minutes away.
Lake-edge building is its own discipline.

Lake-edge building is its own discipline.
A custom home on Eagle Mountain Lake is not the same project as one on dry Parker County prairie. The build envelope is constrained by Tarrant Regional Water District setbacks, the soil moves seasonally, and the expectation of large outdoor entertaining spaces, generous boat-house storage, and view-tuned floor plans changes what every room is asked to do. We have built waterfront in Pelican Bay, around Cottondale Cove and Twin Points, and the cliff lots on the south end of the lake — enough to know the constraints before they bite.
Acreage builds away from the lake
Most of the rest of our Azle work is on 5–20 acre lots in the rural townships west of Lake Worth — the country between Reno, Briar, and Springtown, and the rolling tracts off FM 730 and Jacksboro Highway. These are families who want a real custom home with the room to breathe — full basements, large shop spaces, sometimes a working agricultural component — without giving up Fort Worth access.
If you already own land in Azle, the most useful first step is a site walk. We will drive out, look at your lot, and give you a transparent cost range before you commit to anything.
Built for Azle families
Four reasons North Texas families have hired Open Prairie over the high-volume builders working the same zip codes for nearly thirty years.
Local Since 1995
We have been building in this region since before most of the new subdivisions had names. Every relationship Open Prairie needs to get your job done - engineers, inspectors, trades - already exists and is two decades deep.
Owner on Every Job
Dan Schlaak walks every job site weekly and runs every weekly client meeting himself. You will not be passed off to a project manager who has never met you.
Acreage Builds Done Right
Septic, well, road, pad, tree management, and dust control - things production builders treat as add-ons. We treat them as the job.
Two-Decade Warranty Track Record
Some of our earliest homes are now in their second owner. The warranty we wrote for the first owner still applies, and we still answer the phone. Ask anyone in town.

In most cases, yes - and we are one of the only builders in the region who do them correctly. Soil varies block to block, which is why most builders refuse. We work with engineers we have used here for two decades.
On most acreage outside the city limits, yes. The cost varies dramatically based on depth-to-water and percolation rates. We coordinate the soil testing, the well drilling contractor, the septic engineer, and the inspection sign-offs - all included in our scope.
Yes. Most of the acreage subdivisions here have architectural review committees with their own rules about exterior materials, roof pitch, fence types, and outbuildings. We handle the submittal and any revision cycles as part of the design phase.
Modern Texas farmhouse remains the most-requested style - limestone or brick base, board-and-batten or stone gables, standing-seam metal accents, and big covered outdoor living. Traditional ranch, Hill Country contemporary, and transitional plans are also common. We do not have a house style; we build yours.
